Chimney Crown

The chimney crown is the cement that lies almost flat at the top of a masonry chimney. It covers and seals the top of the chimney. Most chimney crowns are built inadequately and constructed from common mortar mix. This material often cracks and allows water to penetrate into the chimney. A proper chimney crown should be constructed of Portland cement.

The flue liner should project above the crown a minimum of two inches. The crown should provide a down ward slope that will direct the water from the center to the edge of the chimney. Another type of crown has an over hanging drip edge to more effectively direct water from the top of the chimney. This helps prevent erosion and freeze/thaw damage during the winter months.
